-Did you know that you’re supposed to put the tops on the Yankee Candles when you’re ready to blow them out, and that way the smoke won’t escape and stink up your room? I never knew that until I met him. I can picture him picking up the lid and reaching out to place it on the candle as I scrambled over to stop him shouting, “No, no! Don’t put that on while it’s burning.” (I’m overly paranoid.) He didn’t listen, and casually placed the top on the jar saying, “It’s what they’re made for.” And that’s when I learned, there were other more sensible (and glamorous) ways to extinguish a flame than pulling your hair back, leaning your tall frame down to a child’s height, and blowing like a fool until finally the candle is out but the wax is all over your newly cleaned desk. Not that that’s really the most valuable advice, and to be honest I absolutely love the smell of freshly blown out candles. In fact, that’s probably my favorite smell in the entire world- grouped with the scent of hydrangeas, men’s cologne, and my family’s house around the holidays. Still, every now and then I’ll place the lid on one of my fragrant Yankee Candle jars, and witness the smothered flame let out a long whistle of desperation. Then, die a peaceful death. I willfully forgo the beloved smell I associate with childhood camping trips, and Christmas-decorated fireplaces because the “lid trick” reminds me of something I loved so much more... him.-
It's crazy to me how the simplest action can bring you back to a specific moment in time and allow you to remember how you felt at that exact instant. So, how about you? Have you ever had a "lid trick" moment?
